Andrea Zulli is a competition lawyer based in Milan where he heads the Italian competition law department. He specialises in a variety of sectors including financial services, with a strong focus on the insurance and asset management fields, private equity and investment funds/venture capital, consumer goods, software/IT, food and beverage and tobacco.

Andrea has extensive experience of EU, UK and Italian competition law, including merger control, cartel investigations, anti-competitive agreements, abuses of dominant position, and market investigations. He has represented major Italian and international financial institutions and corporates in relation to merger control notifications to the EU, Italian and UK competition authorities, as well as with regard to multi-jurisdictional merger control filings. He has also defended major international companies in a number of EU and Italian cartel investigations and other behavioural matters.

Andrea holds an LL.M. in EU and Competition Law from the University of Stockholm and a J.D. from L.U.I.S.S. University in Rome. He is an Italian avvocato, admitted to the Rome Bar, and a Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales.

Before joining our practice, Andrea spent 10 years in the Brussels, London and Italian offices of another leading international law firm.

Andrea is a native Italian speaker and he is fluent in English.

  • advised a global cosmetics manufacturer in relation to the cartel investigation carried out by the Italian competition authority concerning the cosmetic sector, and the subsequent appeal before the Italian administrative court.
  • advised an international banking group on the antitrust aspects relating to the joint acquisition of an Italian insurance company, including obtaining the required EU merger clearance.
  • advised an international conglomerate on the investigation carried out by the European Commission concerning the cereal trading sector.
  • advised a leading IT company on the acquisitions of numerous software companies by obtaining all required merger clearances at the EU and/or national level (including Italy).
  • advised an internal financial group on the antitrust aspects of various deals - in particular the main hostile takeover of an international insurance group in recent years - including obtaining the required merger clearances at the EU and/or national level (including Italy).
  • advised an international toy manufacturer in relation to the investigation carried out by the Commission concerning restrictions in parallel trade of game cards.
  • advised numerous international groups on the antitrust aspects related to the creation of joint ventures - or the acquisition of target companies - active in the generation of renewable - in particular photovoltaic - energy in Italy, including obtaining the required merger clearances at the EU and/or national level (including Italy).
  • advised a leading UK banking group on the Italian antitrust aspects of various deals, including the recapitalisation carried out by Her Majesty’s Treasury (including obtaining Italian merger clearance) and the sale of a major subsidiary to a consortium of financial institutions.
  • advised a major airline group on the antitrust aspects related to the acquisition of a competitor, including obtaining merger clearances by the German and UK competition authorities.
  • advised various private equity funds on various acquisitions of portfolio companies, including obtaining the required merger clearances at the EU and/or national level (including Italy).
  • advised various financial institutions and corporate with regard to antitrust compliance programmes.
