Whatever the complexities of HR considerations, pensions and retiree benefits pack the biggest punch in sheer dollars. And the dollars are getting bigger.

"Virtually every pension plan is less well-funded than it was five years ago," says David Vincent of Ogilvy Renault LLP.

That's something of which prospective employers are well aware..

The growing profile of pension considerations shouldn't be news to Canadians, who witnessed the dramatic impact of pension liabilities on the restructurings of Air Canada, Algoma, and Stelco, to name but a few..

Yet Canada is hardly the only jurisdiction where pension considerations are front and centre in M&As and restructurings.
