Compassion in the Workplace: Compassionate Care Benefits in Canada

Effective January 4, 2004, amendments to the Canadian Employment Insurance Act (EIA) establish a new benefit: six weeks of compassionate care benefits for employees who must miss work in order to care for or support a gravely ill family member. Employers doing business in Canada must be prepared to meet any new obligations associated with the EIA and the relevant employment standards legislation.
