Biography
Theresa Astles practises in all areas of Canadian and foreign trade-marks, including providing advice and opinions on trade-mark availability and registrability, prosecuting trade-mark applications in both Canada and the United States, representing clients before the Canadian Trade-marks Opposition Board for opposition and section 45 proceedings, and managing trade-mark portfolios.
Ms. Astles has drafted and successfully prosecuted numerous trade-mark applications and has represented many clients before the Trade-marks Opposition Board over the last 15 years. She has participated in setting up trade-mark departments for a number of companies. Ms. Astles also provides advice to start-up companies, assisting them in recognizing and protecting their intellectual property rights. She has also assisted in-house legal counsel in maximizing and maintaining the value of corporate intellectual property rights and in performing due diligence analysis of transactions relating primarily to trade-mark assets.
Ms. Astles also prepares files and prosecutes industrial design applications.
In 2004, Ms. Astles was Director of the Advanced Course on Trade-marks offered by the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada and McGill University.
