Denis Gascon

Biography

Denis Gascon practises competition law and international trade law. He is Co-Chair of our Competition/Antitrust Team. He advises domestic and international clients on all aspects of competition and international trade laws, including Canadian and multijurisdictional merger transactions, criminal cartel cases, trade and pricing practices, and trade remedy cases.

Mr. Gascon represents clients before the Canadian Competition Bureau and the Competition Tribunal in merger transactions reviewed by the Commissioner and regularly advises clients on restrictive trade practices and criminal offences under the Competition Act. He represents and advises Canadian and foreign-based corporations in agricultural products, transportation, steel, pulp and paper, telecommunications, media and entertainment, book publishing, financial services, real estate, electronic products and services, food services, groceries, home hardware, building products, newspaper distribution and consumer products.

Mr. Gascon also appears before the Canadian International Trade Tribunal and the Federal Court of Canada in dumping, trade remedy, safeguards and tariff relief matters and in disputes relating to anti-dumping duties pursuant to the provisions of Chapter 19 of the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement. He regularly advises Canadian and international clients on international trade matters, particularly antidumping actions and other trade remedy proceedings.

• Acted for US-based Archer Daniels Midland Company before the Competition Bureau in the context of its hotly disputed acquisition of the flour-milling assets of Maple Leaf Mills
• Acted for Quebecor in its acquisition of Le Groupe Videotron Ltée
• Acted for RONA inc. in its purchase of Réno-Dépôt
• Acted for Arcelor S.A. in its takeover of Dofasco Inc.
• Represented the Arcelor group of companies and its predecessors in the numerous antidumping disputes brought forward by the Canadian steel industry.
• Lead counsel for Arcelor and other European steel producers in the Canadian International Trade Tribunal's safeguard inquiry into certain steel products
