Biography

Claude Brunet is National Chair of the firm's Intellectual Property Group. He practises intellectual property law and communications, with particular expertise in copyright, the entertainment and publishing industry (music, publishing, television and film), telecommunications (radio and television broadcasting, cable television and computers) and applications before the Copyright Board or the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. He advises clients on all aspects of their copyright portfolio, including assisting with preparing plans to protect their intellectual property, negotiating the acquisition of rights for special projects and transferring rights in the event of mergers or acquisitions. He also represents clients in infringement proceedings and with respect to the certification of proposed royalty tariffs.

Mr. Brunet started his career as a legal advisor to the Composers, Authors and Publishers Association of Canada (now SOCAN). In 1976, he was Registrar of Copyrights and international affairs adviser to Consumer and Corporate Affairs Canada. In 1985, he acted as legal adviser to the House of Commons Sub-Committee on Copyright. He has been a member of several Canadian delegations to UNESCO and the World Intellectual Property Organization.
