The late 1980s were a time of uncertainty for many Canadians, as people from all across the country debated the merits of free trade. Twenty years after the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement was finalized, Derek Burney, senior strategic advisor at Ogilvy Renault, reflects on its success in an op-ed column published in the National Post (Oct. 6) and the Ottawa Citizen (Oct. 8).
"By any measure, Canada is a stronger, more prosperous country than it was 20 years ago," wrote Mr. Burney.
Mr. Burney was chief of staff to then prime minister The Right Hon. Brian Mulroney when the agreement was signed in January 1988 with U.S. President Ronald Reagan. He headed the Canadian team that finalized the FTA at five minutes to midnight in October 1987.
The piece was written as part of a National Post series focusing on the impact of the Free Trade Agreement 20 years later.
