Ogilvy Renault Chair - Yves Fortier - Recognized as Top Arbitrator in the World

Montréal - Ogilvy Renault LLP is proud to announce that L.Yves Fortier, Chairman of the firm, has been recognized as the top arbitrator in the world by The American Lawyer/Focus Europe.  This ranking was the result of surveys conducted globally across a wide range of law firms from January 2003 to April 2005.

Mr. Fortier has been a member of Ogilvy Renault since 1961 and has been the Chair of the firm since January, 1992.  Mr. Fortier is a trial lawyer who has pleaded important cases before all jurisdictions in Canada, and before domestic as well as international arbitral tribunals. He has also served as an arbitrator and chairman on many ad hoc international arbitration tribunals, as well as tribunals constituted by different arbitral institutions including the International Arbitration Court of the International Chamber of Commerce (Paris), the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), the American Arbitration Association (New York), the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Lausanne), the Zurich Chamber of Commerce and the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID). In 1984, he represented Canada before the International Court of Justice in The Hague in the Canada-U.S. Gulf of Maine case.

In July 1988, Mr. Fortier was appointed Canada's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, a position which he held until January 1992. From January 1989 to December 1990, Mr. Fortier served as Canada's Representative to the Security Council of the United Nations.

Throughout his career, Mr. Fortier has received many distinctions.  In December 1991, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada. In June 1992, Mr. Fortier was awarded the Médaille d'Or du Barreau du Québec, the highest distinction of the Quebec Bar. In August 1993, he was awarded the President's Award, the highest distinction of the Canadian Bar Association. In April 1994, Mr. Fortier was made a Companion of the Order of Canada, the highest level of the Order.  Mr. Fortier has also been awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa by the Law Society of Upper Canada, Acadia University, the University of British Columbia and the Université de Montréal. In 2004, Mr. Fortier received the degree of Doctor of Commerce honoris causa from Ryerson University.  Earlier this summer, Mr. Fortier received an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa from McGill University's Faculty of Law.
