Brian Mulroney Honoured by Rx&D Health Research Foundation

Montréal - The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, senior partner at Ogilvy Renault, received today the Medal of Honour from the Rx&D Health Research Foundation. This prestigious award is given to Mr. Mulroney for his pivotal role in enhancing intellectual property in health research during his term as Prime Minister of Canada. In 1987, he demonstrated his commitment to investment in health research in Canada through the implementation of Bill C-22 which brought Canada's intellectual property system in line with other world markets.
According to Dr. Yves Morin, Chairman of the Rx&D Health Research Foundation, "In Canada, Mr. Mulroney's visionary policy shift led directly to today's flourishing research-based pharmaceutical and biotechnological industry." Dr. Morin added that: "Protection of intellectual property is at the heart of health research. Scientists in Canada universities and research institutes owe much to the sound policy on patent protection implemented by Mr. Mulroney."
Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, congratulated Mr. Mulroney for this recognition. Mr. Harper declared, "Thanks to Mr. Mulroney's courage to adopt sound and visionary public policy, Canada has experienced unprecedented growth domestically in pharmaceutical R&D, profoundly impacting the sustainable level of innovative research and development conducted in Canada."
About Brian Mulroney
Mr. Mulroney joined Ogilvy Renault upon graduating from law school in 1964 and practised with Ogilvy Renault until 1976. He went on to serve as President of the Iron Ore Company of Canada before entering politics. He served as Prime Minister of Canada from 1984 until 1993. His government introduced bold new initiatives such as the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the Canada-U.S. Acid Rain Treaty. Prime Minister Mulroney's government also introduced a series of privatizations, a low inflation policy, historic tax reform, extensive deregulation and expenditure reduction policies that continue to be the basis of Canada's impressive economic performance today.
Mr. Mulroney sits on the Boards of Directors of numerous companies and organizations, including Barrick Gold Corporation, Archer Daniels Midland Company, Wyndham Worldwide Corporation, The Blackstone Group L.P., Independent News and Media, PLC and Quebecor Inc.
He also serves as Chairman of the Board of Quebecor World Inc., Chairman of Forbes International and Chairman of the International Advisory Boards of Barrick Gold Corporation and Independent News and Media, PLC.
Mr. Mulroney also serves as Chairman and a director of Persona Communications, Inc., and as a director of Quebecor Media and Said Holdings Limited, all privately held companies.
He is a member of the International Advisory Councils of the China International Trust and Investment Corporation, JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Lion Capital LLP.
Mr. Mulroney is also a director of the Montreal Heart Institute Foundation, the International Advisory Council of HEC Montréal, the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation and the Council on Foreign Relations.
Mr. Mulroney is a Companion of the Order of Canada and a grand officer of the Ordre national du Québec and has received honorary degrees and awards from universities and governments in Canada and abroad.
