Cleantech Investments in Canada on the Rise

October 19, 2007

Toronto - A new survey by Deloitte and Ogilvy Renault LLP on the Cleantech sector reveals that Canadian investors are seeing strong growth potential in clean technologies. Investment opportunities in Canada are on the rise, and 71 percent of investors state that Cleantech investments are contributing to the diversity and importance of their portfolios.

"Interest in this space has gained significant momentum over the past year. We anticipate that this is just the beginning of significant opportunities to come for those investors who have the foresight to see the possibilities in Cleantech," says Maneesh Mehta, national leader of Deloitte's Cleantech practice.

"Climate change is a key business issue today," says Rick Sutin, Ogilvy Renault Senior Partner and Co-Chair of the firm's Cleantech Practice. "Public and corporate attention to global warming is growing, and so is the demand to find solutions. Cleantech companies help provide these innovations, and Canadian investors are now looking for opportunities in this sector."

The Deloitte and Ogilvy Renault survey asked members of the Canadian investment community to describe their participation in, and expectations for the Cleantech sector. The majority of respondents were venture capitalists, with private equity and other investors also taking part. Highlights from the survey include:

  • The investment community is increasingly aware of and interested in the Cleantech sector
  • Investors see strong growth potential in Cleantech
  • Renewable energy and biofuels are attracting the most interest in the short term
  • Typical early growth stage characteristics of the sector are restraining investment

A detailed summary of survey results is available here.
