UN's New York Convention Continues to Shine

February 8, 2008

Montréal - Ogilvy Renault's International Arbitration team was proud to participate in the 11th IBA International Arbitration Day which took place at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City on February 1. The International Bar Association used this occasion to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the New York Convention.[1] Some 650 delegates from over 50 countries were in attendance.

Yves Fortier, Chairman of Ogilvy Renault, brought the event to a close with an address to all delegates at United Nations' Headquarters in New York. Mr. Fortier is the former Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Canada to the UN and one of the world's leading international arbitrators. Alongside Nicolas Michel, Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs at the UN, Mr. Fortier reflected on the successes of the United Nations as "an agent of progress in the international legal field. The New York Convention shines brightly as one of the countless gems of the United Nations' legal crown."

The Convention has been described as one of the UN's greatest achievements in private international law. Today, the New York Convention serves as a driving force behind the success of international arbitration as a means of resolving international business disputes.
